You're thinking of booking Walter The Giant Storyteller at your school?

Wonderful! Here's how it works...

Walter Mayes has spent most of his adult life entertaining and enlightening children, from pre-school to high school, (and adult staff and parents!), with books. Walter's dynamic and positive personality continues to contribute to his popularity, as well as to his life-time commitment to children, books, and the importance of reading.

Successful presentations for your school will be tailored to your needs. From classroom visits to assemblies, from in-service teacher/staff workshops to afternoon or evening parent sessions, we will work with your time schedules, special events, themes, and with the composition of your students. Each session scheduled will be addressed individually, with the underlying, always basic concern for creating and bolstering enthusiasm for classroom and home reading.

Bibliographies will be provided as needed and requested. Promotional materials will be provided as requested.

We ask that booking requests be made at least three months in advance. If we are unable to accommodate your chosen date, we will contact you as soon as we know Walter will be available in your area again.

Once we verbally confirm Walter's appearance at your school, suggested guidelines and a (very short!) requirement list will be forwarded to you, with our confirmation documents.

Please also consider Walter's Artist-in-Residence Program.

School fees are:

  • $350 per hour during normal school hours (with a two-hour minimum);
  • $1500 for all-school-day performance for kids, allowing you to structure Walter's time to maximum advantage for your students;
  • $500 for after-school-teacher presentation w/bibliography (1.5 hours);
  • $450 for a one-hour family audience presentation.

Presentations to parent-only audiences are best when Walter can have the full attention of the adults in attendance, and in order to facilitate that, Walter will make himself available for $300 for a one-hour evening parent presentation with bibliography. We encourage schools to use this savings to help provide child care for those who would be otherwise unable to attend these presentations. Parent presentations, when child care is provided, can also include a brief storytelling performance for all ages, at the end of the evening at no additional charge.

There is a $10 fee for travel expenses within the greater Bay Area. Expenses in all other areas of the country are negotiable, depending upon Walter's general travel schedule and the framework of your event.

We welcome your questions and requests. Thank you for your interest.

Information we will ask you to provide includes:

  • the school's complete name
  • the school's age and grade range
  • the complete address, telephone number(s), fax number, email address
  • the name of the individual(s) responsible for the booking, and for the on-site hosting or supervision of the event
  • the school's, or district's, requirements regarding signed contracts and/or purchase orders
  • the precise nature of your program expectations
  • the target audience and the number of students/staff/parents expected
  • special goals or seasonal themes within your institution of which we should be aware
  • a copy of your school's or district's state-mandated (as applicable) profile or 'report card'; (this helps Walter best tailor his presentations for your students).
